What happens with a 10 page simplex job. Does it do the same thing after a number of pages. The paper path is the same for duplex and simplex only when duplexing, the second side is printed first and the paper drops down to the left side thru the duplex unit and then back up and thru the duplex unit to feed the paper back into the printer. Heat would not be a factor since the density of the print is determined by the charges to the toner cartridge and the transfer roller. Only thing I would try if I have other printers would be to swap the high voltage ps and dc controller and see if the problem follow the swapped parts or stays with the same unit. You could first try swapping the formatter since that is easy and if it follows the formatter, then you know the formatter has issues. I do not know what to tell you since what you have happening I have never seen and I have worked on 100's of this model.
