I don't have a comment about software, but I wold caution you that your project may be doomed by the resolution of the toner. While the printer can logically address a 600dpi space, I bet the toner particles may be bigger than that.
I suspect that if you created an image that had every other pixel black, that rather than get a 50% black image as one would expect, you might very well get a solid black, or close to it, printed page. I have not tried this myself, so YMMV.
You would probably have better luck on some kind of photographic stock on something other than a laser printer.
