LJ 2840 gear noise yields partially printed pages.

My LJ 2840 only has 6800 pages printed. When I COPY or PRINT from either Tray1 or Tray2 I hear some gear slipping noise and the printed page is either blank or partially printed. I've read about the gear alignment procedure but this appears to be some gears slipping. If the gears are out of alignment will that cause the slipping? I can't figure out which gears are slipping and I receive NO PAPER JAM error messages. In fact, I receive no error messages at all... Just a blank or partially printed page. So, my question is will realigning the gears stop them from slipping or does the printer need further repair? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
