I work for a company where we've purchased several HP 401n printers.
We've recently encountered problems with paper tray #2 not being recognized as containing paper. I've checked the tray settings (both length and width adjustments) to ensure that all is correct for standard 8.5" by 11" letter-sized paper.
A reasonable amount of paper in the tray only produces the "Load Paper" message on the display. When I load the tray with paper to the top of the tray, the printer seems to notice this, but only makes a periodic grinding sound, like gears unsuccessfully attempting to pick up paper.
I started to think this was a printer problem - until I swapped the tray with an identical one from another printer and (surprise!) everything worked properly. I examined both trays side-by-side and could not determine any difference between them (although I know that there MUST be something different - I just can't determine what it is).
This has since happened on more than one of our 401n printers and I'm beginning to think it may be a manufacturing issue since I cannot find anything different about these problem trays.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, how was it resolved?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
