Then is would appear the ECU is the issue. It controls how much heat the fuser uses to bind the toner to the paper and if the fuser is not hot enough when the job first starts, then the toner will smear. If you print multiple copies of the same job, the fuser gets hotter as more pages are printed so the toner is then fully bonded to the paper. To test to a 10 page copy job and immediately send another job of 1 page but do so as the printer is printing the 10 page job. Odds are the 1 copy job will be fine since the fuser will still be hot from the previous job.
