HP P2055dn smudge on printout

I am having some printing problems with a HP P2055dn printer. When printing there is a smudge that is about 1” wide, repeats at 2.25” intervals, and is centered horizontaly. The repair manual states that at that interval the problem is the fuser sleeve but checking the sleeve shows the sleeve to be perfect with no blemishes. I have removed the fuser assembly and installed it in another P2055 HP printer where it prints perfectly. I reinstalled the fuser into the original printer and I still have a smudge. We are using genuine HP print cartridges and toner. I have tried three different cartridges all with the same resulting smudge. Trying the cartridges in a different printer produced print outs without any issues. In printing multiple test pages in a row I have noticed that by the fourth page the smudge is greatly reduced and in fact is very difficult to detect. Checking the paper type, it is set to plain. Setting the paper type to medium produces a printout where the smudge is hardly noticeable but it prints at a much slower rate. I have done a system reset on the printer without any improvement. I am at a loss. Is there anything I am missing or need to check? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
