I'm trying to work out if I'm missing something with printer network security.
We have used "Access Control lists" to enforce the security on "what device can print direct to our LaserJet printers" for some time. We restrict it so only our "Print Servers" can print direct over IP.
On two printers we've recently tested, we discovered that a Windows 8 laptop can setup and print direct to these 2 printers ("Color LaserJet CP3525" and "LaserJet P3015" ) using the WSD port. These were autoconfigured by Windows when you supply just the IP address. We traced the problem to "Web Services Print" being enabled on the printers (which seems to be the default!)
Does anyone know why the security of "Access Control List" is being bypassed when the "Web Services Print" box is ticked/enabled ? As, unbeknown to us, this seems to have left our printers insecure.
