David- Thanks for the input. I will contact amdc.com to get a quote for the work. I assume you will be ok with my mentioning your name as the source of the referral.

Our history with the 2605dn is more complex. My wife and I had two of the 2605dn that developed the same problem. We have Dell workstations and have added RAM, swapped hard drives and other more consumer friendly work. My wife also has a number of electronic sewing, serger and other machines that she is adept at fixing.

We researched online and found the very same repair instructions you attached to your email. While the work looked harder than the normal fix, we decided to tackle it. We also referred to instructions from a UK website.

The result was a disaster. The work was at least a factor of 10 harder and longer than we had been led to believe online. We felt like doctors performing brain surgery as our first operation. When we reassembled the one unit, the printer would not start and the PC would not recognize it despite our trying shutdowns, reboots, unplugging, software reloads and other usual fixes.

We have not attempted to repair the other unit. Our hope is that it can be fixed at a reasonablecostby an HP printer pro who can demonstrate to me that he or she has done exactly the same fix  on a 2605dn with successful results. If not, I'll trash this unit and sell the remaining HP OEM cartridges on ebay.

BTW, we were very surprised to see that the engine of this unit is from arch-rival Canon, not HP. We also concluded that the engine was poorly designed since dust was not sealed out of the areas with lights and mirrors.

Thanks again, Walter Healy
