Place paper on tray 1 when this happens and run a config page from the information menu. It will tell you what size the printer "thinks" is in tray 2. Odds are it will say executive. This is because the little circut board on the right side rear which is covered by a black plastic piece and has 3 metal bars has gone bad. Most times I think it is the top switch of the 3 on the board that no longer works. The board needs to be replaced or if you only use letter paper you could ohm out the switch to make sure it is the top that is not working and just solder it in the closed position.
