m1522nf to Mac 10.8.4 error: "There is no device selected."

I have downloaded two driver versions to connect my MacBook Air to my HP multifunction laserjet m1522nf, which is connected by USB.

When time to select the printer, which is on and connected by USB, I get the same error: "There is no device selected. Please select a device in the list provided."

HOWEVER, I can print from my mac -- it does recognize the HP m1522nf for outbound printing, but not for set-up or scanning.

I've turned it on and off. I've started by trying to scan something, but the HP window says "not setup on PC."
