Probably not the tray but the mech that releases the spring loaded bottom of the tray. Look in the cavity and in the middle is a plate that goes across the printer and I think a small plastic tab attached in the middle. Bend the middle of the plate up a little so it sort of bows just a tad in the middle and see if when you insert the tray it now pops up. Just look at the paper level indicator on the left which should move when the tray is inserted. The release for the tray in in the middle bottom towards the front on the tray.
